Essential Transportation
The Essential Transportation Service is available to residents of all ages in Sutton and Abercorn.
This service is designed to support individuals experiencing a temporary or ongoing situation of vulnerability, such as aging, social isolation, recurring medical treatments, recovery from illness or surgery, or financial or social hardship, by providing transportation to essential appointments when transportation would otherwise be a barrier.
The service is available for the following types of appointments :
- medical ;
- psychosocial ;
- legal.
Each beneficiary is accompanied by a volunteer who provides not only transportation, but also a caring, compassionate, and reassuring presence throughout the journey and, if desired, during the appointment.
For many people, this support makes a real difference during times that can sometimes be stressful or challenging.
Service cost
A contribution of $0.54/km is requested to help cover some of the costs associated with the volunteer’s use of their vehicle, including fuel and maintenance.
Payment methods
Beneficiaries must :
- have the exact cash amount with them in the vehicle ;
or - have a cheque available at the time of transportation.
Beneficiaries must also have a debit or credit card with them to pay for parking fees when required.
Parking
A 50% reimbursement of parking fees may be available for appointments at regional hospitals when parking exceeds two hours.
